He called for my coach (who was on Team Z with Greg at the time) but I answered my coach’s phone since he was busy. At 14 years old, I couldn’t believe that I had Lemond on the phone…it was my chance to ask him anything in the world, one on one! But all my brain could muster was, “So…was it cool winning the Tour?” To which he said, “Uhhh…well, yes…yes it was. Where is Jerry?” …. I wanted to crawl into a hole after that. I’ve thought of exactly 19million different questions I SHOULD have asked him since that day, but you just don’t get those chances twice. I still get red-faced thinking about how dumb I was.
